LaScola, a chemical and bioengineer, to focus on developing advanced materials for a range of industry needs plus developing screen printing technology for tissue engineering applications

September 16, 2022, Baltimore, MD – Early Charm Ventures, a company that creates, owns and operates ventures that convert science to revenue, today welcomed Michael LaScola – a chemical and bioengineer – as Research Associate with Early Charm’s Materic.

As part of his role as Research Associate, LaScola will work with Materic portfolio company DiPole Materials to develop advanced materials for its customers across a range of industries. He also will focus on the translation of Materic portfolio company Ortuvo‘s screen printing technology for tissue engineering applications.

LaScola, a Maryland native, previously worked with Early Charm in the early stages of the pandemic to assist the DiPole Materials team with the urgent production of respirator filter material for healthcare workers and first responders.

LaScola also previously worked with Ortuvo on screen-printing technology that originated in a lab at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) where he previously worked.

LaScola holds a BS in Biological Sciences and BS in Chemical Engineering from UMBC. He also completed a MS in Chemical and Biochemical Engineering from UMBC.

In addition, LaScola’s recent work includes a research project – via his role as Research Assistant with UMBC’s Department of Chemical, Biochemical and Environmental Engineering – in which he developed a hydrogel for the maintenance and differentiation of screen printed human neural stem cells.

As part of his academic work, he also has published scholarly articles in the Journal of Materials Chemistry B and ACS Biomaterials Science and Engineering, and was the recipient of UMBC’s Undergraduate Research Award in 2017 and 2019.

“We’re very fortunate to welcome Michael back to our Early Charm and Materic team,” said Ken Malone, Executive Officer with Early Charm. “Michael’s deep research and lab experience combines well with his practical work in advanced materials that directly addresses our customers’ product needs.”
