June 17, 2021, Baltimore, MD – Early Charm, a venture studio that converts science to business, today announced the hiring of Phillip Alvarez, a biophysicist, as Business Development Associate.
In this role, Alvarez will develop business cases and funding for new ventures primarily in Early Charm’s Engineered Products portfolio, which includes devices used in healthcare, machine vision and industrial applications.
Over the last six years, Alvarez’s work has centered on research in biomedical optics and biomaterials at the University of Maryland, College Park, in partnerships with the US National Institute of Standards and Technology, the National Institutes of Health and the US Department of Defense.
Alvarez's research has included development of single and multi-photon microscopes for neuroscience and oncology applications, as well as investigating cell-substrate interactions in-vitro.
“Phillip worked with us under our Venture Fellows Program where we engage scientists in launching new ventures,” said Ken Malone, Executive Officer with Early Charm. “He impressed us with his ability to rapidly understand new science and apply it to market needs.”
Alvarez is a PhD candidate in Biophysics with the University of Maryland, College Park, where he’s focused on development of optical systems to investigate interactions between the electrical and mechanical response systems in electrically active cells. In addition, Alvarez earned a BS in Engineering Physics and a BS in Computational Mathematics from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.
