Early Charm’s continued portfolio company and staff growth
drives need for more collaboration and creative space
December 16, 2020, Baltimore, MD – In a move to accommodate its continued fast growth, Early Charm Ventures, a venture studio that converts science to business, announced today it will relocate its executive and business operations into Baltimore’s 1100 Wicomico building.
This move, set to take place in early 2021, follows Early Charm’s decision last February to take over 2,150 square feet of production and laboratory space in 1100 Wicomico for its growing custom manufacturing and development work.
Early Charm, which will leave its longtime office space at Spark Baltimore, plans to occupy an additional 3,000 square feet of office and conference meeting space in 1100 Wicomico.
Early Charm now comprises 15 portfolio companies working in the following industry sectors: drug design, custom materials, aquaculture technologies and machine vision.
"Over the last year, we’ve added a lot of people to Early Charm and plan to add more,” said Ken Malone, Managing Director with Early Charm Ventures. “Having all our Baltimore operations in one building will improve communications and creativity for our team. Plus, the commitment of 1100 Wicomico ownership to continue expanding the building into a product innovation hotspot is a big driver for us. We're also going to miss Spark Baltimore. We were there when their doors opened and enjoyed growing alongside them.”
“Early Charm’s continued expansion aligns with our focus on attracting the area’s most innovative companies and entrepreneurs that are looking to grow and be part of a larger like-minded community,” said Chris Regan, Principal with Tower Hill Atlantic, which owns and operates 1100 Wicomico. “This addition to the community, along with others to be announced in the first half of 2021, brings us a critical step closer to the full execution of the Baltimore Innovation Center and our efforts to bring sustained job-creation and investment to southwest Baltimore.”
1100 Wicomico, built in 1914, served as the main warehouse for the Baltimore Bargain House, the country's fourth-largest mail-order wholesale business. The building was one of the earliest to utilize reinforced concrete and a sprinkler system for heavy storage in Baltimore. Today, the building’s large customizable spaces, freight elevators and loading dock drive its growth as it reclaims its identity as the economic hub of West Baltimore.
